L.V. Berkner High School senior Nancy Pham said she felt like an outsider when she was growing up.
While other students at school went off to dance or soccer practice, she went home to watch television under the supervision of babysitters she came to regard as grandparents.
Unlike many of her peers, Nancy, 18, lived in a single-income, limited-English speaking household. Nancy’s father left the family when she was a toddler, so her mom worked long hours and sometimes even seven days a week to support Nancy and their family back home in Vietnam.
Nancy will attend the University of North Texas in the Fall.
