SANTA FE He arrived at the end of a school prayer lawsuit that thrust Santa Fe into a national spotlight.

Then newly hired superintendent Jon Whittemore discovered something surprising about the district that had been lampooned by many as intolerant.

Santa Fe had an undeserved reputation, Whittemore said.

Other superintendents would say to me: Are yall still praying down in Santa Fe? Whittemore said. We had this reputation around the state, and I dont think it was justified. It was more perceived than real.
