Wren Baker vowed just a few days ago to find a proven head coach to take over North Texas' men's basketball program.

UNT's athletic director came through on that promise Monday, when the school announced Grant McCasland has been hired to replace Tony Benford.

The Denton Record-Chronicle reported early Monday afternoon that UNT was close to finalizing a deal to hire Arkansas State's head coach to take over its program.

UNT announced McCasland had been hired a a short time later.

McCasland, 40,  spent just one season at Arkansas State. He was previously...

North Texas coach Jalie Mitchell saw an opportunity coming after a tough loss to Indiana on Tuesday.

The Mean Green had three games remaining before the opening of Conference USA play, a series that offered the opportunity to pick up a little steam.

UNT took the first step toward reaching that goal on Saturday in the form of an 84-61 win against Incarnate Word at the Super Pit.

Terra Ellison scored a career-high 19 points and hit just about every shot she took on a day there were plenty of positive signs for the Mean Green. UNT (3-6) had three other players finish in double figures and...

North Texas coach Tony Benford vowed to shake things up after the Mean Green struggled offensively in a loss to UTA over the weekend.

That is just what Benford did heading into UNT’s game against Delaware State on Thursday.

Allante Holston moved into the starting lineup, while A.J. Lawson came off the bench. That switch and some crisp ball movement helped UNT come out of its funk in a 73-40 win over the Hornets at the Super Pit.

“We played together and shared the ball,” Benford said. “We didn’t want to settle, mixed it up and got paint touches. We got the ball inside almost every...

North Texas is headed back to the site of one of the more memorable moments in program history.

UNT accepted a bid to the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Sunday. The Mean Green will face Army at 11 a.m. Dec. 27 at the Cotton Bowl.

UNT has played in only eight bowls in program history, the last coming in the Heart of Dallas Bowl the end of the 2013 season. UNT beat UNLV 36-14 in front of a crowd of 38,380.

That turnout was a big selling point in UNT being invited back to face the Black Knights in a rematch of a game UNT won 35-18 on Oct. 22 at West Point.

North Texas didn’t have its usual starting quarterback or its star running back for a vital late-season game against Southern Miss on Saturday.

None of that mattered, thanks largely to a gutty performance by Alec Morris. The senior saw his first significant action since being benched after the Mean Green’s season-opening loss to SMU and guided UNT to a slump-busting 29-23 win at Apogee Stadium.

That victory snapped a three-game losing streak and kept the Mean Green’s bowl hopes alive heading into its regular season finale on Saturday at Texas-El Paso. A win would give UNT (5-6, 3-4 Conference USA) the six wins its...
