North Texas isn’t in its familiar spot atop the Conference USA soccer standings heading into the stretch run of the season.

The Mean Green have a chance to change that in their last four games before the conference tournament, beginning with a key showdown with Charlotte on Friday at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

UNT (10-4-1) is 5-1 in conference play and in a tie for fourth place with Rice at 15 points.

The good news for UNT is a postponed game against Louisiana Tech gives it an opportunity to make up ground quickly.

The moves that new athletic director Wren Baker is making off the field are quickly adding steam at a time when UNT’s program appears to be headed in the right direction.

Tucked in a parking lot just beyond the Texas Woman’s University campus sits a laboratory that deals in human test subjects.

Testaments to their past experiments are plastered on the walls: pictures with boxing gloves raised, mouth guards in, trophies hoisted high.

The sweet science is alive and well at Jimenez Old School Boxing Gym.

Run by father-and-son duo Joe and Ben Jimenez, the gym is buzzing with activity late on a Wednesday afternoon. The doors are open to better circulate the sweat-lodge-style heat that is beating down early in October, yet the effects of heat are still...

North Texas has hired Ryan Peck as its new executive senior associate athletic director for external affairs.

Peck most recently was the associate vice chancellor for external affairs at Denver, one of UNT’s old rivals in the Sun Belt Conference.

New UNT athletic director Wren Baker announced the addition of Peck on Friday.

Peck oversaw fundraising, ticketing, marketing, communications, corporate sponsorships, creative efforts and technical services at Denver.

“Ryan Peck is one of the bright up and coming leaders in collegiate athletics,” Baker said in a statement. “He has broad...
