North Texas has hired Ryan Peck as its new executive senior associate athletic director for external affairs.

Peck most recently was the associate vice chancellor for external affairs at Denver, one of UNT’s old rivals in the Sun Belt Conference.

New UNT athletic director Wren Baker announced the addition of Peck on Friday.

Peck oversaw fundraising, ticketing, marketing, communications, corporate sponsorships, creative efforts and technical services at Denver.

“Ryan Peck is one of the bright up and coming leaders in collegiate athletics,” Baker said in a statement. “He has broad...

North Texas goalkeeper coach Matt Montayne kept telling Miranda Schoening her time would come at some point this season with the Mean Green soccer team.

That time arrived on Sunday, when the highly regarded freshman came through with a stellar performance in an unexpected start.

The Alabama native moved into the Mean Green’s lineup for a key game against Western Kentucky after starter Brooke Bradley broke her hand during practice Tuesday night.

The victory snapped a 14-game road losing streak and came in UNT’s Conference USA opener.

What might have been even more important was the win showed that UNT’s players have bought in to the concept of hard work in practice paying off on game day. UNT coach Seth Littrell harped on that point following a disheartening blowout loss to Florida and saw his players respond.

“It’s huge for the players to see the results,” Littrell said. “Last week was a big week for us for a lot of different...

HOUSTON — Jareid Combs crashed into the middle of Rice’s line and met running back Darik Dillard right at the line of scrimmage Saturday night at Rice Stadium.

The Mean Green’s players poured onto the field seconds later to celebrate a dramatic 42-35 double-overtime win and a landmark moment in the first season of coach Seth Littrell’s tenure with the Mean Green.

UNT overcame a 17-point deficit and knocked off the Owls in its Conference USA opener when Combs and linebacker Brandon Garner stuffed Dillard on fourth-and-1 from the Mean Green’s 16-yard line in the second overtime period.

HOUSTON — The North Texas soccer team began defending its regular-season Conference USA title on the road Sunday night, and it had to overcome a rough start.

The Mean Green gave up an early goal to Rice, but Rachel Holden scored the next two goals to give UNT a 2-1 victory.

North Texas was down early after Jenny Fichera converted a penalty kick for Rice in the eighth minute.

“We have so much respect for Rice. Usually, these two programs collide at the end of the year with a title on the line, so it was a little strange to open up conference with them,” UNT coach John Hedlund said. “I’m really proud...
