Three receptions, 35 yards, and a single touchdown rarely draw much attention.  But the pass catching potential of Belton’s Remington Lutz convinced the University of North Texas to offer, and he accepted.

Used primarily as a blocker in the Tiger offense, the 6-6, 210-pound tight end looks forward to being a receiving threat in college.  The Mean Green coaching staff believes they can develop Lutz into a two-pronged threat at both blocker and receiver.

“The coaches want me to play a little tight end and also flex me out in the slot,” he told the Denton Record-Chronicle.  “There is a role for a bigger...

The North Texas men’s basketball team won’t have to wait long to find out how it stacks up against the elite teams in Conference USA this season.

UNT will face all four C-USA teams that finished with at least 23 wins a year ago in its first seven conference games this fall. The Mean Green will play five of their first seven conference games on the road after finishing 1-12 away from the Super Pit last season.

That tough early slate for the UNT men was among the highlights of the C-USA men’s and women’s basketball conference schedules that were released Wednesday. The slates mirror each other,...

Some good news for North Texas slid under the radar the last day or so that I wanted to point out here on the blog. The school’s football and women’s tennis teams received public recognition awards from the NCAA for their performance on the Academic Progress Rate report.

Both programs finished in the top 10 percent of their respective sports.

It’s a fairly complicated process how the NCAA figures up the score. The bottom line is this — what the report showed is that both the UNT football and tennis teams are keeping their athletes in school and eligible.

In college athletics that’s a...

The North Texas football program added David Stenklyft as its director of recruiting today.

Stenklyft was the assistant director of player personnel at Fresno State the last four years. He was previously the defensive quality control coach at Texas A&M. Prior to his time at A&M, he was in a recruiting/operations role at Alabama and was a student assistant at A&M 2006-10.

His bio lines up pretty well with UNT special teams coordinator Tommy Perry.

New UNT coach Seth Littrell mentioned this spring that he had a few more hires to make for off-the-field roles. This was one of them...

The North Texas women’s basketball team will face Arizona and Indiana in addition to playing in the preseason Women’s NIT during the 2016-17 season.

Those games, plus the Mean Green’s annual showdown with rival SMU, were all a part of UNT’s nonconference schedule released Wednesday.

UNT will host TWU in an exhibition game Nov. 6 before opening the season with its first game in the WNIT at Arkansas-Little Rock on Nov. 11.

The Mean Green will host Indiana in a premier home game on Dec. 6 and face Arizona on the road Nov. 22. UNT also will travel to SMU on Nov. 30 in its second season under...
