UNT signee putting up big numbers

The UNT men’s basketball team is off to a pretty good start in Conference USA play after winning two out of its first three games in the league season.

The Mean Green also have some help on the way heading into next season in the form of guard A.J. Lawson. He’s putting up some good numbers in high school this year.

On the football front, there are a series of season-in-review pieces that came out today following Alabama’s win over Clemson in the national title game.

The North Texas men’s basketball team is coming home this week for what looks like it will be a big opportunity to jump into the Conference USA title chase.

The Mean Green picked up a key road win against Texas-San Antonio during a two-game road trip last week and are 1-1 in conference play heading into a three-game home stand that will begin Saturday against Rice.

The Owls (5-10) have lost their first two games in C-USA play. The Mean Green (6-9) will then take on Marshall (5-9) before closing out their home series with a game against Western Kentucky.

Bryce English was on his way home to Texas a few weeks ago when his phone rang.

The former DeSoto defensive tackle had just decided to leave Kansas State and look for a school close to home where he could continue his career.

North Texas defensive line coach Kevin Patrick was on the other end of the line, ready to make his initial recruiting pitch. That discussion resonated with English, who finalized his decision to transfer to UNT on Tuesday.

UNT adds three more football assistants

New North Texas coach Seth Littrell has added three assistant coaches, bringing him close to completing his staff, a source close to the situation said Sunday morning.

Troy Reffett will join UNT’s staff as Littrell’s assistant head coach and will coach the Mean Green’s safeties. Former Kentucky assistant Tommy Mainord is joining the Mean Green’s staff as associate head coach and will coach UNT’s inside receivers, while former North Carolina strength coach Zack Womack is joining UNT’s staff for the same position.

UNT hires ex-Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell as offensive coordinator

New North Texas coach Seth Littrell hired his first two assistants Friday, including Graham Harrell as offensive coordinator.

Harrell and receivers coach Joel Filani both come from Washington State, where they worked for Mike Leach. Littrell was on staff with Leach at Texas Tech from 2005-08, when Harrell was the starting quarterback and Filani a receiver.

Harrell was outside receivers coach at Washington State, the national leader with 397 yards passing per game. Harrell finished his career at Tech averaging 351 yards per game with 134 touchdown passes, then an NCAA record.
