Three University of North Texas underclassmen know about laying it all on the line.

That’s how the sophomore finance majors of team GoMeanGreen beat 244 other collegiate teams in TD Ameritrade Inc.’s first “thinkorswim Challenge.”

Led by team captain Mason Hendrickson, the UNT trio parlayed $500,000 in play money into $1,565,176 after four weeks of mythical trading that used TD Ameritrade’s teaching software that syncs with real-time market activity.

UNT team aims to reduce waste at soup kitchen and beyond

A team of University of North Texas graduate students led by an economics professor are working to create a statistical-forecasting model intended to help a local soup kitchen eliminate waste.

Economics professor Michael McPherson is spearheading the effort, funded by a community-engagement grant.

"We may actually be able to help other soup kitchens in the area and outside of the area," McPherson said.

Our Daily Bread, a Denton soup kitchen, serves an average of 205 meals a day, according to its executive director, Millie Bell. She's the kitchen's only full-time employee.

If three University of North Texas students used real money in a recent investment competition, they would be rich.

The students grew their virtual investment portfolio 213 percent in four weeks, winning the first ever Thinkorswim Challenge, a virtual stock trading competition put on by TD Ameritrade. The UNT students beat out hundreds of other students from 96 universities across the country.
