New lab targets logistics

On a back wall far away from tables and chairs, two 70-inch touch-screen monitors are mounted, with a small desk between the two to place laptops and other materials.

While flashy, the set-up serves a purpose: providing a collaborative lab space for University of North Texas students to work on specific logistics projects for industry partners.

Called the Complex Logistics Systems Lab, students studying logistics — how a company stores and distributes its products and supplies — can now work with new software and technology to solve problems for companies such as Greyhound and Target.

Three teams of University of North Texas students earned cash prizes for analyzing a technology vendor for the hospitality industry in the Fall 2014 Northwestern Mutual Integrated Business Case Competition.

Six teams of graduating seniors, selected by instructors from a representation of all College of Business departments, made presentations to a panel of judges in November. The judging panel included: Chris Gray of Accenture Consulting, Grace Warden of Northwestern Mutual Corp, Randall Jamison of Ze-Net Technologies and Scott Jamison of Ze-Net Technologies.

Three University of North Texas underclassmen know about laying it all on the line.

That’s how the sophomore finance majors of team GoMeanGreen beat 244 other collegiate teams in TD Ameritrade Inc.’s first “thinkorswim Challenge.”

Led by team captain Mason Hendrickson, the UNT trio parlayed $500,000 in play money into $1,565,176 after four weeks of mythical trading that used TD Ameritrade’s teaching software that syncs with real-time market activity.
