UNT's Renowned Band Director Retiring

DENTON, Texas -- The Grammy-nominated director of the One O'Clock Lab Band is retiring this month after nearly three decades. Neil Slater, the head of jazz studies and the third director in the 50-plus years of UNT's best-known jazz ensemble, is leaving on a high note. The 20-piece ensemble just ended its tour of European music festivals. 'The crowd just wouldn't let them off the stage,' said Craig Marshall, manager of the band, describing a concert in Italy. JAZZ: Vocalists tip the scales across the city

Last week gave fans of vocal jazz the chance to catch Kevin Mahogany and Sophie Milman. The vocal sounds continue this week when Curtis Stigers, Peter Cincotti and KJ Denhert come to town.

For Mahogany and Milman, the label "jazz vocalist" works without added adjectives. That's not true for Stigers, Cincotti and Denhert, who blend pop, rock and/or soul in with their jazz chops.

On his recent Concord CD, Real Emotional, Stigers explores contemporary classics from folks such as Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. You can hear those tunes and more when he hits the stage...
