A Jazz Dream could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance for University of North Texas theater students.

Even those students who make a career in theater might not get a chance to be part of a world-premiere musical, and freelance director Maggie L. Harrer is holding the student performers to a professional standard in the project.

“I told the students that I needed them to be available to me, even if they weren’t called for a rehearsal,” Harrer said. “I explained that I’ve given myself to this project 100 percent for these seven weeks, and if I need them to be here, they have to be here.”

The opening show of the University of North Texas’ 2012-13 theater season joins theater, dance, English, history and music students. Guest director Maggie Harrer said the world premiere musical calls for that kind of collaboration.

A Jazz Dream is the adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Harrer, the dramaturge-in-chief and a longtime jazz fan, said she knew the popular Shakespearean comedy was destined to be set as a musical.

With a jazz score.

Harrer, a freelance theater director from New York, is a guest artist at the helm of the cross-curriculum theater project culminating in A Jazz Dream, The Musical. Consulting mainly with University of North Texas professor Richard DeRosa, Harrer worked with about nine graduate students — DeRosa’s proteges — to create the score.

You don’t have to pay gala prices or wear black-tie attire to enjoy opera.

Not all the time, anyway.

Opera on Tap is something of a national movement that takes opera singers out of the metropolitan performance halls and puts them in dive bars and snug little pubs. Denton is a recurring spot for the North Texas singers of Opera on Tap, and the vocalists will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Abbey Underground, 100 Walnut St.

There’s no cover, and you can keep those ball caps on and knock back a beer while taking in the Halloween-themed show, “Pirates and Fairies and Creepy Clowns.”
