Twelve students will perform in one of the University of North Texas College of Music’s most prestigious concerts.  The musicians are the winners of the annual Concerto Competition, a contest that identifies the college’s top performers in wind, strings and vocal programs. One musician, Tian Yang Liu, was a finalist in last year’s International Double Bass Solo Competition and was voted the audience favorite by ballot.  The Concerto Competition winners will perform with the UNT Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Winspear Hall at the Murchison Performing Arts Center, 1200 North Texas Blvd....

The University of North Texas Opera Theatre and Chamber Orchestra take on a different sort of opera in the closing weekend of Mark Blitzstein’s Regina.  The adaptation of Lillian Hellman’s play The Little Foxes includes musical theater, jazz, Dixieland and blues in its libretto.

Marc Blitzstein’s glorious and problematic opera Regina, originally produced on Broadway in 1949, took the stage at Murchison Performing Arts Center in Denton Friday night in a largely successful and unfailingly fascinating production by the UNT Opera.  Blitzstein based the opera on Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes, a drama of greed and dysfunction in an upwardly mobile family in Alabama in the early twentieth century.
