Reddit co-founder to speak at UNT this month

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian will be a featured speaker in the Distinguished Lecture Series on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

After helping start Reddit, a social and news online forum, Ohanian has gone onto launch other websites and forums online, while also co-founding a venture capital firm.

The event is set to begin at 8 p.m. in the UNT Coliseum. The lecture is open to the public with the purchase of a ticket. Tickets are free for students, $5 for student guests, $8 for faculty and staff and $10 for general admission.

Activist and former child abductee Elizabeth Smart spoke to a sold-out lecture crowd of University of North Texas students, alumni and guests Thursday night at the University’s Union Lyceum as part as the UNT Distinguished Lectured Series.

After being kidnapped and abducted at the age of 14, Smart continues to spread her message and share her story almost 15 years later, now married and pregnant.

Smart opened her lecture by talking about how people and their problems are “universal.”

Smart to be 1st speaker in spring lecture series

The first speaker in the Distinguished Lecture Series this spring will be Elizabeth Smart, a child abduction survivor and advocate.

Smart was abducted from her bedroom in Salt Lake City in 2002, when she was 14-years-old.

Now, she works with foundations to teach children about violence and sexual crime, human trafficking and frequently supports related legislation.

The lecture is scheduled for 8 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Union Lyceum at 1155 Union Circle.

Bill Nye ‘the science guy’ to speak at UNT in Denton

Tickets for the public went on sale Friday for an April appearance of Bill Nye, “the science guy,” at the University of North Texas.

Nye will speak at 8 p.m. April 6 at the UNT Coliseum as part of the school’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

Admission is $20 for individual tickets or $10 each for 10 or more.

University spokeswoman Leslie Minton said she expects tickets to be sold out by Monday. About 8,000 were available, and around 5,000 student tickets had been taken.
