TMA Showcases Regional Talent in Reflections of East Texas July 26-Sept. 27

Five talented and versatile artists with strong ties to the region are in the spotlight with the Tyler Museum of Art’s next major exhibition, Reflections of East Texas. 

The exhibition opens Sunday, July 26 and continues through Sept. 13 at the Museum, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. on the Tyler Junior College main campus. 

Admission is free. 

Organized by the TMA and co-curated by the Museum’s Jon Perry and Derek Frazier, Reflections features more than 30 works across a broad spectrum of media by artists Keith Carter, Ted Ellis, Diane Frossard, Mike Perry and Franklin Demetrius Willis. 


Mass. Amateur golf: Rodriguez, Warfield among area leaders at Oak Hill

After Nick Rodriguez bogeyed each of his first two holes in the Massachusetts Amateur on Monday, he didn’t throw any clubs. He didn’t even get frustrated. He simply got better.

Rodriguez recovered to card a 1-over 71 at Oak Hill Country Club and is tied for 12th. After the final round of medal play on Tuesday, the low 32 golfers in the field of 144 will advance to match play.  Nick McLaughlin, who was born in Boston, resides in New Hampshire and golfs out of Far Corner in Boxford, shot a 4-under 66 to grab the first-round lead. McLaughlin, 21, will enter his senior year at the University of Virginia...

Mastering mariachi

Every year, the University of North Texas has hosted a mariachi summer camp for high school students throughout the DFW to attend. The focus is not only fine tuning their skills in creating quality Mariachi music, but sparking an interest in attending college by allow the camp members to live in the dorms and eat in the cafeterias during the course of the camp.


Fundraiser set by church and campus ministry

A night hike and a wilderness survival camp for kids are on tap at the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area, which is open for regular summer hours once again after being closed for a few weekends as a result of flooding.

Some trails were damaged because of flooding and repairs will be made as the water recedes, an environmental learning area spokeswoman said. Trail conditions are posted weekly on the organization’s website.

The night hike will begin at 8:30 p.m. Saturday and last about two hours. The event is open to ages 5 and older. Registration is required by calling 972-219-3930 or emailing lisa.cole@unt...
