Marshall College of Arts and Media opens 16th annual Jazz-MU-Tazz summer camp for younger students

The 16th annual Jazz-MU-Tazz event for students grades 7-12 kicks off Monday, June 9, in Marshall University's Jomie Jazz Center on the Huntington campus. It will end with a finale concert Saturday, June 14, at Pullman Square Plaza.

 

Marshall Jazz Professor Dr. Ed Bingham said the camp offers the students a better understanding of playing jazz, particularly with improvisation. He also sees Jazz-MU-Tazz as an enrichment program for attendees.

"There's this sort of synergy that happens when you bring students from all over to one place to make music," Bingham said.

Bostic named sole finalist for Stafford superintendent

Robert Bostic, the Denton school district’s assistant superintendent for academic programs, is the lone finalist for the Stafford Municipal School District superintendent job.

The Stafford school board unanimously named Bostic its lone finalist April 16, and by state law must wait 21 days before formally hiring him to the position.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to help serve more kids,” Bostic said Thursday. “It will be a great leadership career opportunity for me and my family.”

When Kathleen Lambert moved to Twin Falls as a teenager, her first question wasn’t “Where is the mall?”

Hers was: “Where’s the library?”

And that’s been her home away from home ever since.

Employees of North Central Texas College were honored at the annual “Gems of NCTC” banquet March 28 at the Gainesville Civic Center.

The event included special awards for faculty and staff, as well as recognition and awarding of service pins to employees.

The employee of the year award was presented to Melinda Carroll. The Excellence in Teaching award was presented to Jill Swarner. The Dr. Gordon Yeargan adjunct faculty of the year award was presented to Anita McDonald. Jewelers to talk craft, business at meeting

A pair of jewelers will visit the Denton-based Visual Arts Society of Texas from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday for the group’s monthly meeting and demonstration at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St.

Nora Riley Jewelry, the joint creative venture of University of North Texas graduate Sutton Norris and Ball State graduate Mary Beth Clark, will talk about their business and artistic partnership, and they’ll break down both their jewelry-making technique and their playful approach to materials at the meeting.

The demonstration is free for art society members, and $3 for visitors.
