A petition is gaining steam to replace Governor Greg Abbott as the keynote speaker at next month's University of North Texas commencement ceremony.

Some students posted the petition on Change.org, saying Governor Abbott's views don't align with UNT's.

Soon after University of North Texas President Neal Smatresk posted on Twitter that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott would be the university’s commencement speaker, students quickly responded.

Senior Cortney Pace was one of several who responded negatively, tweeting: “How can we bring in a speaker for commencement that does not support local control?”

“The day after Denton passed the fracking ban, [Abbott] said he was dedicated to repealing that,” Pace explained. “I don’t understand how he could repeal local control, and I can’t support that.”

Gov. Greg Abbott will give the commencement address at the University of North Texas next month for the university’s first mass commencement ceremony, which kicks off a yearlong celebration of UNT’s 125th anniversary.

The commencement ceremony will be May 16 at Apogee Stadium. It will mark the first time graduates from all colleges will join together for a single ceremony.

UNT commencement changes coming

The upcoming December commencement for University of North Texas soon-to-be graduates will be the last the school hosts, and the last time students walk across the official commencement stage to receive their diplomas.

More details about the migration to a single May commencement were released this week by UNT President Neal Smatresk after first announcing the proposed change over the summer.
