Thursday Night the Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas held its 6th annual Celebrate Mayborn Awards Reception.

Every year the school acknowledges journalists who give back by speaking to students and being involved in the community.

Among this year's recipients was NBC 5's Kristi Nelson. Nelson is a UNT alum and has been at NBC 5 for 15 years.

Bernie Sanders’ call for change struck a chord with Christopher Enriquez, the North Texas district director for the League of United Latin American Citizens.

“It’s been quite a movement he’s been able to create,” said Enriquez, 23, a student at the University of Texas at Arlington. “He’s doing what [Barack] Obama did. Inspiring change, and a new way.”

The Hispanic community, especially millennials, need to get more involved, and quickly, he said. “We’re the future of this country, if we’re not already the people being directly affected.”

The new president of the National Black Public Relations Society is Neil Foote, a principal lecturer at the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism.Foote also leads a media consulting firm in Dallas — Foote Communications.The organization has chapters in major media markets and works to provide its members peer-to-peer support, networking and mentorship.

There is no doubt about it – America is in need of infrastructure repair. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers’ latest infrastructure report card, U.S. infrastructure was given a D+ and the country’s crumbling levee and dam system was noted in particular.

That danger is more apparent than ever for the over 400,000 people living downstream from the Lewisville Lake Dam in North Texas. Engineers are saying that dam is a ticking time bomb if nothing is to prevent its breach.
