North Texas upsets Southern Miss for fifth win

North Texas didn’t have its usual starting quarterback or its star running back for a vital late-season game against Southern Miss on Saturday.

None of that mattered, thanks largely to a gutty performance by Alec Morris. The senior saw his first significant action since being benched after the Mean Green’s season-opening loss to SMU and guided UNT to a slump-busting 29-23 win at Apogee Stadium.

That victory snapped a three-game losing streak and kept the Mean Green’s bowl hopes alive heading into its regular season finale on Saturday at Texas-El Paso. A win would give UNT (5-6, 3-4 Conference USA) the six wins its...

By the time Dee Baulkman arrived at North Texas over the summer, time was quickly running out before the Mean Green’s season opener.

The former Arizona Western College safety barely had time to figure out where his locker was, let alone learn an entirely new defense.

Baulkman has steadily improved since then and reached a key point in his development in the Mean Green’s loss to Texas-San Antonio last week, when he made his first start.

The junior finished with four tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage.

WEST POINT, N.Y. — North Texas came into its first season under coach Seth Littrell hoping to author one of the more remarkable turnaround tales in program history.

The Mean Green still have a long way to go to finish the story, but added what could end up being a compelling chapter on Saturday with a 35-18 win against Army at Michie Stadium.

UNT came into the day as an 18-point underdog and pulled off the upset to inch closer to becoming bowl-eligible for just the second time in the past dozen years.

The fact UNT (4-3) is still in the bowl hunt is a story in and of itself. The Mean Green...

Tucked in a parking lot just beyond the Texas Woman’s University campus sits a laboratory that deals in human test subjects.

Testaments to their past experiments are plastered on the walls: pictures with boxing gloves raised, mouth guards in, trophies hoisted high.

The sweet science is alive and well at Jimenez Old School Boxing Gym.

Run by father-and-son duo Joe and Ben Jimenez, the gym is buzzing with activity late on a Wednesday afternoon. The doors are open to better circulate the sweat-lodge-style heat that is beating down early in October, yet the effects of heat are still...

Breaking through for a win against Rice last week was significant for North Texas for several reasons.

The victory snapped a 14-game road losing streak and came in UNT’s Conference USA opener.

What might have been even more important was the win showed that UNT’s players have bought in to the concept of hard work in practice paying off on game day. UNT coach Seth Littrell harped on that point following a disheartening blowout loss to Florida and saw his players respond.

“It’s huge for the players to see the results,” Littrell said. “Last week was a big week for us for a lot of different...
