Tyler Jermstad was busy grilling fajitas Saturday afternoon before North Texas’ season opener against SMU at Apogee Stadium when a couple of unexpected guests dropped by.

Jermstad couldn’t believe it when he turned away from his smoker and saw new North Texas athletic director Wren Baker and recently hired right-hand man Jared Mosley standing there in the stadium parking lot — hands extended.

The duo made the rounds outside of Apogee, meeting fans, taking pictures and drumming up support during a time of transition in UNT athletics.

North Texas’ quarterback situation changed during a loss to SMU on Saturday. How much it changed is something Seth Littrell will keep a secret until the next time the Mean Green play.

UNT’s new coach said heading into the season senior transfer Alec Morris would start, and freshman Mason Fine could see time depending on the way things played out.

The Mean Green’s plans for Fine are a lot more definitive now. The two-time Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year came on late and led UNT on a touchdown drive against the Mustangs that was one of the bright spots in the Mean Green’s 34-21 loss.

Alec Morris came to North Texas with simple dreams just a few months ago.

UNT coach Seth Littrell confirmed on Monday those dreams are about to come to true for the former Alabama quarterback. Morris has been named the Mean Green’s starter for their season opener Saturday against rival SMU.

Littrell released UNT’s depth chart during his first game-week press conference. Morris was listed as the Mean Green’s starter as expected with freshman Mason Fine as his backup.

“Alec has gotten a lot better since he first got here in January,” Littrell said. “His biggest strides were from spring ball...

Preston looks to be key in UNT defense

Sat, Aug 27, 2016 - 12:41am

Ashton Preston never imagined his role on the field changing once he arrived at North Texas last season.

The Oklahoma native had played cornerback his entire football career, and he was pretty good at it. One recruiting service rated Preston as the second-best player at the position in Oklahoma during his senior season.

The speed and agility Preston showed back then are helping the sophomore thrive after an unexpected offseason move to nickelback.

Preston was listed as co-starter with converted linebacker Calvin Minor at the nickel spot following spring practice. He has continued to excel at the position in...
