North Texas went through one of college football’s annual rites of passage on Monday.

The Mean Green lined up for their team photo at Apogee Stadium and talked about the upcoming season during their annual media day. The main topic of discussion was UNT becoming a tighter knit team in a time of transition.

Michael Sewell Jr. thought he would be in the midst of fall camp at Cal at this point in his career just a few weeks ago.

Those plans changed quickly and led to the LA Valley College safety to commit to North Texas late Sunday night.

Sewell (6-2, 197) was set to join Cal for his sophomore season this fall. He will return to LA Valley instead and will be a midterm transfer and a member of UNT’s 2017 class.

UNT defensive coordinator Mike Ekeler recruited Sewell.

“I wasn’t going to be eligible,” Sewell said Sunday night. “I decided to come back to LA Valley and transfer in December....

“The coaches want me to play a little tight end and also flex me out in the slot,” he told the Denton Record-Chronicle.  “There is a role for a bigger...
