Today could be the day UNT breaks through for NCAA tourney win in soccer

The countdown is on this afternoon to one of the bigger games of the season for the North Texas athletic department.

The NCAA women's soccer tournament begins this weekend, and UNT will be in action at Texas at 5 p.m.

This is the fifth time UNT has played in the NCAA tournament. The Mean Green have lost each of their previous four games, including a 1-0 squeaker at the end of the 2015 season at Texas Tech.

The tough part for UNT is that it is always on the road in the NCAAs, playing a highly ranked team from a power conference.

This year isn't any different. Texas is ranked 18th nationally.

Editorial: UNT women’s soccer team unsung heroes

The University of North Texas is celebrating its 2017 homecoming with a series of events this week. The marquee attraction, of course, is the football game against the University of Texas-El Paso at Apogee Stadium in Denton.

But the unsung heroes of UNT's 2017 athletic program are coach John Hedlund and his successful Mean Green soccer team. The women will be making a fifth NCAA tournament appearance on Friday against the University of Texas Longhorns in Austin. The team's last tourney appearance was in 2015.

The Mean Green didn’t have a player among the conference’s five players who received superlative honors and also were passed over for the 11 spots on the first team, despite winning the league’s regular-season championship outright.

UNT (14-4-1) finished 9-1 in conference play with its only loss coming at Texas-San Antonio.

UNT finishes regular season atop C-USA

On a day when five North Texas soccer seniors were honored, it was that class that led the team to a 3-1 win against Louisiana Tech, capturing the Conference USA regular-season title outright on Sunday afternoon at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

“I’m really proud of this team winning the regular-season [C-USA] title; they had big shoes to fill from last year’s team and after losing seven starters, but it was the seniors and my captains all year leading the way,” UNT coach John Hedlund said. “This conference is simply getting more balanced with all 14 teams battling it out every week, there are no easy wins.

North Texas will have an opportunity to add yet another conference soccer title to its ever-growing collection in its last two games of the regular season.

The Mean Green will travel to face Florida International on Thursday before taking on Louisiana Tech at home on Sunday in a game that was postponed earlier this season.

UNT heads into that series of games tied with Western Kentucky and Rice for the lead in the Conference USA standings with 21 points. UNT is 7-1, while WKU and Rice are 7-2.

The Hilltoppers and Owls each have one game left.

The extra game gives UNT (12-4-1) a...
