Sat, Mar 26, 2016 - 10:52pm

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — North Texas claimed its first Conference USA series of the season and handed Western Kentucky its first series loss as a C-USA member, powering past the Lady Toppers 9-6 in the weekend finale Saturday.

The Mean Green (18-12, 3-6 C-USA) scored five runs in the top of the third, and junior shortstop Kelli Schkade belted her league-leading 11th home run in the fourth. Junior Jessica Elder (11-4) earned the win in relief, limiting WKU to one run and four hits in four innings.

“It feels good to come out of the weekend with our first league series win,” UNT coach Tracey Kee said. “As soon as they got...

Benford to return as North Texas coach

Sun, Mar 20, 2016 - 8:00am

North Texas coach Tony Benford told the Denton Record-Chronicle late Saturday evening he will return for his fifth season with the Mean Green in the 2016-17 campaign.

There was some question whether UNT would retain Benford after a 12-20 season that concluded with a loss to Western Kentucky in the second round of the Conference USA men’s basketball tournament on March 9.

UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal declined to comment on the program or Benford’s future after the Mean Green’s 84-76 loss to the Hilltoppers.

Days quickly passed since that loss with Benford still in place. Villarreal...

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Jalie Mitchell spoke of exceeding expectations a few months ago as she prepared for her first season as North Texas’ head coach.

The Mean Green have met that goal in a lot of ways as they head into the Conference USA tournament today.

UNT beat a nationally ranked team for the first time in program history back in November when it toppled Oklahoma and has since doubled its win total from last season.

UNT (10-18, 5-13 C-USA) will look to add another milestone to that list today when it faces Florida Atlantic (14-15, 6-12) in an 11 a.m. first-round game in the Conference...

UNT’s Johnson finds hot hand, confidence from 3-point range

Wed, Feb 24, 2016 - 8:00am

There were still three hours remaining before North Texas’ shootaround the day of the Mean Green’s game against Florida International last week when Eric Katenda arrived at the Super Pit.

The senior forward wanted to get some extra shots up and was greeted with a familiar sight: Deckie Johnson firing away.

Johnson took 3-pointers from the top of the key, the corner and just about everywhere else.

Not much had changed a few hours later when UNT was clawing its way back from a 12-point deficit late against FIU. Johnson was shooting from those same spots — and hitting — to help lead the Mean Green to a slump-...

UNT notebook: Tourney victories earn UNT votes in poll

Just standing there never felt so nerve-racking for North Texas outfielder Danielle Gregory.

The junior went to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning against Baylor in the championship game of the Getterman Classic on Sunday with the score tied.

Gregory worked the count to 3-1 and was given the “take” sign by UNT coach Tracey Kee.

Gregory watched as ball four sailed by, giving UNT a 7-6 win and the tournament championship.

UNT beat then-No. 21 Baylor twice over the weekend, both times in extra innings.

“Getting the take sign made it easier,”...
