UNT closer to buying building

Thu, Apr 9, 2015 - 10:11am

The University of North Texas is one step closer to buying the 91,000-square-foot building that currently houses Sack & Save.

The Board of Regents authorized the university to complete the purchase for $6.25 million, and university officials expect the deal to go through in the next 90 days.

It is unclear at this point if Sack & Save’s lease will continue when the property is transferred, as final details of the negotiation are still being worked out, said Bob Brown, UNT’s vice president for finance and administration.

“If the property ends up being transferred to the university with the lease that’s...

‘Uptown Funk’: Another N. Texas teacher, another video

Wed, Mar 25, 2015 - 9:15am

Uptown Funk, the massive hit by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, is fast becoming a contender for most-imitated/parodied song of all time.

YouTube is getting increasingly crowded with different takes on the song — one of the most viral coming from Scot Pankey, a theater arts teacher from Dallas’ A. Maceo Smith High School, whose tribute brought Bruno Mars to tears and is now at nearly 12 million views on YouTube.

Kolache Haven Is Kolache Heaven

Sun, Mar 22, 2015 - 9:48pm

My favorite is a shop called Kolache Haven.

Kolache Haven is located just south of the University of North Texas in Denton. The offerings here include a myriad of...

Dan’s in the details

Fri, Mar 20, 2015 - 10:34am

Dan Mojica was all set to accept the Community Arts Recognition Award at the end of February.

But the fickle North Texas winter snuffed out the ceremony, an annual party staged by the local agency that gives the award, the Greater Denton Arts Council.

The council rescheduled the party for Friday night.

In honor of Mojica, Denton Time decided to ask Mojica about the many little details that make up Dan’s Silverleaf, a venerable watering hole and Denton music venue.

If you’ve ever been inside the Industrial Street bar, you’re familiar with the odd angles of the interior, and the...

Texas History Month: ‘Virtual Race Across Texas’ offers fun, prizes

Tue, Mar 17, 2015 - 10:50am

Brian Bolinger, chief executive officer of the Texas State Historical Association, had a feeling that the Denton-based nonprofit organization’s new “Virtual Race Across Texas” online game would be a hit with Texas history buffs.

How big a hit? Enough people participated to crash the server on the first day.

“We had 8,000 people sign up to play during the first 24 hours,” Bolinger said. “It kinda overwhelmed us a bit, but we were pleasantly surprised that so many people logged on to play and learn more about Texas history.”

The free...
