A new craft cocktail bar is now open on the west side of Hickory Street near the University of North Texas, and it won’t be offering $1 well drinks.

While owners Amy and Jack MacDonald plan to still offer $2 canned beer specials like many college bars on the street, the canned beer specials are craft brews from Four Corners Brewery in Dallas.

They wanted to try something different from their current restaurant and pub, Jack Mac’s Swill and Grill, and add variety to the Fry Street area.

McKinney and Frisco mayors wager bet on FCS title game

When it comes to college football, McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller said he often doesn’t know who to root for.

One son is a student at University of North Texas. Another son is going to University of Alabama. His daughter graduated from University of Arkansas.

But this week, his college football team is in town. Loughmiller’s alma mater, Illinois State University, will take on North Dakota State University on Saturday in Frisco for the FCS championship title.

The city of Denton plans to offer free Wi-Fi public downtown after it completes its three-phase installation in March.

The city, which has been working on the initiative for about a year and a half, has been pushing to support an innovation district downtown.

You know that old saying about the two things you never want to watch being made: sausage and laws? It turns out the sausage part is pretty short and sweet (I can’t speak to the legislative process), with just five steps: Take fresh meat, add aromatic spices, mix it all together, grind and case it, then cook and enjoy. You can read all about it at the “Made in Denton County” exhibit at the Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum. Syracuse’s Sausage Co. in Ponder is one of the businesses highlighted; it’s been producing some 200,000 pounds of sausage a week since 1982.

Carrico atop list of ideas for new school name

More than 60 supporters have suggested that Denton ISD officials name a high school for former athletic director Bill Carrico, according to the district’s campus name bank list.

At least four other names have also been suggested for the new school in the district’s far east region: 380 High School, East Denton High School, Elm Fork High School and Hawk Valley High School.
