Former DISD trustee Carver ‘Dan’ Peavy dead at 68

Carver Daniel “Dan” Peavy was a former opera singer, school teacher, choir director and entrepreneur. He was also a Dallas ISD trustee forced to resign after a foul-mouthed, racist, secretly recorded phone conversation was released to the public.

Peavy died Tuesday at age 68. He had a stroke last year and had been in declining health, and a fall earlier this month broke his pelvis, his family said.

Services are scheduled at 1 p.m. Saturday at East Dallas Christian Church.

UNT Hall of Famer Andy Everest has died

Everest served as assistant head coach with the UNT football program from 1973-78 under Hayden Fry, his old Odessa High school teammate, and went on to serve as UNT’s athletic director from 1979-81.

UNT enjoyed some of its best seasons in program history during Everest’s time as an assistant coach, when the Mean Green posted a 40-23-1 record. The era was highlighted by a 21-14 upset win over Tennessee in 1975.

Everest was a cornerstone of Fry’s coaching staff and recalled some of the values they instilled in UNT’s players in 2006, when he attended a lettermen’s dinner in Denton.

Mildred Wilkerson Vick died Friday, May 23, 2014, at the age of 97.

Graveside service was May 27 at Azleland Cemetery with burial under the direction of Biggers Funeral Home.

Mildred was born Nov. 26, 1916, at Knob Hill to Bill and Atris Nix Wilkerson. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and teacher, having taught for 37 years, and she kept in touch with many of her Decatur and Eagle Mountain Elementary students. She was honored and humbled when they named a building at Eagle Mountain Elementary after her.
