College prep conference held at UNT

The National Hispanic Institute hosted a five-day program for high school seniors at UNT this past weekend, one of three it hosted nationwide.

The university partners with the NHI to host one of the three Collegiate World Series conferences, which spans five days. The conference started July 27, and housed and fed students while they were on campus.

Students who attend are about to enter their senior year of high school and are Latino. The program is designed to prepare them for higher education, future careers and leadership opportunities.

Allen HS and UNT join forces to offer admission program

Allen ISD and the University of North Texas have joined together to offer the “Eagle Advantage” to students at Allen High School. The program offers juniors in the top 20 percent at the end of their fall semester the opportunity to receive guaranteed admission to UNT.

Navarro County Electric Cooperative announces recipients of scholarships

Navarro County Electric Cooperative recently awarded scholarships to eight students in the amount of $6,000. They are Morgan Cook, Cody Carroll, Makinsey Nehib, Taner Tunstall, Kelly Williams, Rebecca Bowles, Frank Robles and Lindsey Fautt.

Softball honors show area talent

Lauren Craine wasn't quite perfect this season, but it would be a challenge to find another high school pitcher in Texas who's better.

Craine and fellow recent Aledo High School graduate Allie Arneson were named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 5A All-State Team. They led the Ladycats to a second consecutive state championship.

 

Craine posted a 22-1 record this season. She accounted for almost every one of the Ladycats' (23-1) victories. Over her career, Craine posted a 77-5 record.

Arneson, who was also the District 8-5A Most Valuable Player, batted .600.
