Canton Musicians Learn to Improvise at Jazz Camp

After a week of hard work, approximately 10 middle-school aged students showcase their skills in jazz improvisation Friday morning. 

The students had studied for a week in jazz camp, offered by Canton public schools last week. Prior to the concert, head teacher Tom Moran told parents he was pound of students for taking the journey into jazz music. It's not easy to put oneself out there to solo in front of a crowd, he said. 

"Everyone who takes a solo is really taking a giant step into a whole new world," he said.

WHITNEY – Whitney High School will bid farewell to the class of 2012 in commencement ceremonies at Waco Hall on Friday, June 1, at 7 p.m. WHS will award diplomas to 86 students this year.  Valedictorian of the senior class is Krystian Sisson, daughter of Erick and Annette Sisson of Whitney. She plans to study fashion design and fashion merchandising at the University of North Texas.  Sisson has been National Honor Society secretary, Drama Club president and Fellowship of Christian Athletes secretary, and she has also been active in cheerleading, choir, Student Council, Spanish Club, one-act play and U.I.L. prose. Spring girl scout renovates nursery to earn Gold Award

A local girl scout has earned the organization's highest award. Claire Tyrrell, a member of the Spring Girl Scouts of America chapter, earned the Girl Scouts of the USA's Gold Award for her work renovating the nursery at Hosanna Lutheran Church. Less than 5 percent of girls who join the Girl Scouts achieve this national recognition. "I learned a lot of renovating skills, such as painting, sanding, using power tools, how to put in flooring and how to take care of all the tools needed," said Tyrrell, a junior at Klein Collins High School, in a press release. David J. Waxman of Jasper was honored as the 2012 Ralph W. Steen Memorial East Texan of the Year by the Deep East Texas Council of Governments on Thursday.
