Hanks High student wins $2 million in scholarships

Hanks High School senior Kristian Garcia is known on campus as the $2 million man.

That's the amount of financial aid the 18-year-old senior received after being accepted by more than 20 universities across the country, and most offered him lucrative packages to attend their schools.

Garcia, who graduates 38th in his class at Hanks, was accepted by 24 universities, including Cornell University, the University of Southern California and University of Pennsylvania.

PALESTINE — A blood drive is planned Saturday for former Palestine youth Charles “Nolan” Conaway, 13, diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a pediatric cancer. The blood drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot. Conaway is the son of Candace and Randal Johnson of Cypress and the grandson of Mattie Berryhill of Palestine. His aunts Linda Allen and Karen Boyd also live in Palestine. “They used to live in Palestine but moved away three years ago — which is good because it’s near his hospital,” Berryhill said. “He’s going to have several blood transfusions doctors say.
