On Monday, the United States and Cuba re-established diplomatic relations after 54 years, drawing mixed reviews around the country and here in Denton.

Local resident Carmen Cruz said although she’s proud of her Cuban heritage, she has mixed feelings about the two governments re-establishing diplomatic relations.

The daughter of Cubans who immigrated to this country, Cruz said she has heard stories from relatives about sadness, grief and loss.

“I think that there’s still a lot of pain and corruption in Cuba [so] it’s hard for the Cuban exile community to celebrate,” said Cruz, a Denton resident of 18 years. “...
