UNT student wins international award

A University of North Texas student won a student playwriting award.

Jacob Sampson, a UNT senior, won the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation Award and DAMU Contest for the U.S. Students of Drama and Performance Studies.

Sampson wrote a play with a theme inspired by the works of Havel, a playwright, human rights activist and Czech Republic president from 1989 to 1992.

The contest rules required applicants to make use of an artificial language Havel created in his 1965 play, The Memorandum.

Sampson will travel to Czech Republic for two weeks in November.

Partnership with Mexican official grows

The partnership between the Secretariat of Education for the state of Jalisco, Mexico and the UNT College of Education remains strong after 15 years.

Students and faculty visited with the secretariat as part of a trip to Guadalajara. The secretariat supervises education from early childhood to colleges and research centers in the state.

Because of the partnership, UNT students training to be teachers get to interact with teachers in Mexico and learn about their culture and education system.

'Young Artists' take the deep dive

The halls are alive with the sound of music.

The halls in question are at the First Congregational Church in Manchester Village, where, depending on the time of day, visitors get a preview on what the Manchester Music Festival's "Young Artists" are up to for the upcoming performance they will present the following Monday.

Chamber music reverberates from the practice rooms, mostly from the large meeting room on the main floor under the sanctuary. Student awarded library association scholarship

The American Library Association named University of North Texas master’s student Tommy Vinh Bui a 2015 Spectrum Scholar.

With the scholarship, Vui will receive $5,000 toward his education plus pre-professional development opportunities like career placement and leadership training.

Bui is part of the Greater Los Angeles Cohort of the College of Information, which means he takes classes online and at schools in California.

He is scheduled to graduate by 2016.
