Texas colleges surge in popularity among foreign students

AUSTIN - Yujin Cho won admission to Purdue University’s doctoral physics program, but she did some research before leaving South Korea and decided that West Lafayette, Indiana, sounded too remote.

Cho, 26, instead chose the University of Texas, where classes resumed this week. She admitted to being surprised by the Austin landscape when she arrived.

“I expected cactus, not green things. I was impressed," she said.

Now a third-year graduate student, Cho is among a fast-growing number of students who travel from homes overseas to study in places they've only imagined in the United States.

DENTON - A number of Texoma-area residents were among University of North Texas students named to either the President’s or the Dean’s lists for the fall 2015 semester. To be named to the President’s List, undergraduates must complete at least 12 academic hours with a perfect grade point average of 4.0. For the Dean’s List, undergraduates must complete at least 12 academic hours with a grade point average of 3.5 to 3.9.

UNT signee putting up big numbers

The UNT men’s basketball team is off to a pretty good start in Conference USA play after winning two out of its first three games in the league season.

The Mean Green also have some help on the way heading into next season in the form of guard A.J. Lawson. He’s putting up some good numbers in high school this year.

On the football front, there are a series of season-in-review pieces that came out today following Alabama’s win over Clemson in the national title game.

The North Texas men’s basketball team is coming home this week for what looks like it will be a big opportunity to jump into the Conference USA title chase.

The Mean Green picked up a key road win against Texas-San Antonio during a two-game road trip last week and are 1-1 in conference play heading into a three-game home stand that will begin Saturday against Rice.

The Owls (5-10) have lost their first two games in C-USA play. The Mean Green (6-9) will then take on Marshall (5-9) before closing out their home series with a game against Western Kentucky.

Bryce English was on his way home to Texas a few weeks ago when his phone rang.

The former DeSoto defensive tackle had just decided to leave Kansas State and look for a school close to home where he could continue his career.
