Summer music workshop teaches young musicians to play the harp

The TCU Summer Music Institute offered middle and high school students a chance to strengthen their musical abilities at this year’s Summer Harp Workshop. The workshop took place on June 19 and 20 and was directed by Dr. Laura Logan. Logan is the director of the TCU Harp Ensemble and was the founder and director of the Harpfire Summer Camp for 10 years. During the workshop, students participated in a variety of intense classes including solo masterclasses, ensemble rehearsals, and jazz improvisation. Summer reading success at Lakehills Area Library and Boys & Girls Club

Who says kids don't like to read? No one in Lakehills should. The Lakehills unit of the Boys & Girls Club of Bandera County and the Lakehills Area Library held cooperating summer reading programs this year and over 100 area children read hundreds and hundreds of books over a two-month period.

The children in the two programs will have celebrated their success yesterday and today with a hot dog party and prizes. The Boys & Girls club children partied at Hill Country Elementary School yesterday and the library children at the library today.

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Watching reruns of “Friends” won’t just be a lazy way to beat the heat for some students at the University of North Texas this month.

These students, who will be visiting from the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico at Toluca, or UAEM, will be closely watching short clips from the popular NBC sitcom as part of their English as a Second Language classes. They will answer questions about what they believe will happen on the episode to practice different verb tenses and American conversation.

UNT mariachi camp marks 5th year of helping kids

DENTON (UNT), Texas -- Since 2008, the University of North Texas mariachi camp has not only helped students polish their musical skills – but has made the path to college easier for many of them.  Sixth- through 12th-graders play the guitarrón, vihuela, violin and trumpet and sing mariachi songs of celebration and sorrow at the five-day camp. But they also get a glimpse of university life by staying in a residence hall, learning about the admissions process and hearing about college life firsthand from UNT students. Mariachi Quetzal was formed in the summer of 2008 in Denton, Texas. The original 10 members met while performing in college and other professional mariachis. Not only has Mariachi Quetzal performed in their native Dallas-Fort Worth area, but they have also played in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas and New York City. Mariachi Quetzal performs annually at the Texas State Fair and has collaborated with Bubba Hernandez and the Grammy Award-winning band Brave Combo.
