It’s been an exciting school year for teenager Aditya Vaidya. This year he’s had the chance to experience achievements in both of his interests — science and music.

Last September, he presented his advanced engineering research at the annual Association for Computing Machinery Conference on Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Health Informatics in Newport Beach, California.

The 17-year-old is a first-year student at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas and has an interest in pursuing studies in computer science after finishing his residency program at the university....

People fleeing violence in their own countries for a better life in the United States sometimes leave with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.

Kiyeon Lee, a high school junior at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas, said he imagined how life might be in their shoes, how uncomfortable things could be and how good it would feel to have some help. The 16-year-old from Euless didn’t stop at imagining. He organized efforts to offer a helping hand.

Students’ research gains notice

Three research projects from seven local high school students have gained the attention of the country’s top researchers in recent months.

Students from the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science at the University of North Texas were unsuccessful in advancing to the national Siemens Competition last weekend, but the academy probably had more semifinalist and regional finalist placements in this year’s contest cycle than any other school in the nation, according to university officials.

The University of North Texas named Glênisson de Oliveira dean of the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS). He will begin serving as TAMS dean in January.

“Glênisson de Oliveira brings a wonderful combination of enthusiasm, creativity, energy and experience to the important position of TAMS dean,” said UNT Provost Warren Burggren. “TAMS is one of UNT’s signature programs, and I am delighted that we have been able to attract leadership of this caliber.”
