UNT: Air Force members pursuing doctoral degrees use education to better military logistics

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. John Dickens and Maj. Aaron Glassburner will both soon add Ph.D. to their already impressive credentials.

The two service members are completing their doctoral degrees at UNT as part of a unique program with the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), a graduate school out of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, that provides professional training and continuing education opportunities for service members.

Much of AFIT's training is done in-house, but the institute periodically sends students to external universities.

Veteran issues call to action

Mark Roy’s words for this year’s Veterans Day ceremony were a call to action for the community to help stem the tide of veterans lost through suicide and other unfortunate events after their return home and transition from military to civilian life.

Roy, a retired Marine Corps lieutenant colonel, was the keynote speaker of the Wednesday event. It was organized by the Denton County Veterans Services Office, Texas Woman’s University and the University of North Texas and held on the lawn of the Denton County Courthouse on the Square.

UNT staff member leads senior chorus

A woman in the alto section pokes her hand in the air at a Monday night rehearsal of the Robson Ranch Music Club.

“Yes, ma’am?” asks artistic director Arturo Ortega.

The 87-voice senior chorus made up of residents at Robson Ranch has just taken a short break from an intense arrangement of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” The chorus is rehearsing music for a concert honoring veterans.

“When you gesture like that, are you wanting us to come on stronger or are you just, you know, in the moment?” the woman asks.
