DENTON, Texas — After four years competing at the University of Colorado, Jaron Thomas graduated and possessed one remaining season of indoor track and field eligibility.

Rather than wait to start his doctoral program at the University of North Texas and spend another year in Boulder, Colorado, he is finishing his athletic career in Denton, Texas.

“People always say that I’m a transfer athlete, but I always correct them. I graduated and really enjoyed my experience there,” said Thomas, who is studying for a doctorate in audiology. “I love UNT, but Colorado is my home for college...

UNT students to vote on increase in athletics fee

North Texas students will vote on a potential increase in student fees this week that would significantly boost funding for the school's athletic department.

UNT currently has a fee of $10 per semester credit hour for athletics. The school's athletic department also receives a portion of a student services fee.

The proposal would increase UNT's athletics fee to $16.25 per semester credit hour but would eliminate the student services fee. The result would be a net increase for students of $4.25 per credit hour that would provide the athletic department an additional $3.5 million per year.

Wren Baker has only been the athletic director at North Texas for a little more than a year, but he's been around college athletics long enough to identify the feeling heading into the Mean Green's game against Texas-San Antonio on Saturday.

"If you do this long enough, you get the vibe when a game is different," Baker said. "This game has a different feel."

That's because it's one of the biggest regular-season games UNT has played in years. The Mean Green (3-2) are 2-0 in Conference USA play and alone in first place in the league's West Division heading into a showdown with the Roadrunners, one of their biggest...

And no one knows “mean” better than “Mean Joe” Greene.

North Texas is counting on second-year head coach Seth Littrell to put the “mean” back in the “Mean Green.”

“It’s our core values, selfless, tough and discipline. It’s what we go buy everyday and it’s been in style ever since Coach Littrell came,” said running back Jeffrey Wilson.

Seth Littrell press conference: UTSA game huge for UNT
Archived

North Texas coach Seth Littrell held his weekly press conference today in advance of the Mean Green's showdown with Texas-San Antonio on Saturday.

UNT was off last week, when just about everything fell into place perfectly for the Mean Green. UTSA lost to Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech fell to UAB and suddenly, UNT was alone in first place in the C-USA West Division standings at 2-0.

The Mean Green are halfway to becoming bowl eligible at 3-2. UTSA is off to a solid start at 3-1, but is probably in a must-win situation heading into its showdown with UNT after losing its C-USA opener last week.

Littrell pointed...
